I don't understand how someone could continue that for such a long time. I would get so burnt out on it.

Well, there's 558 chapters and according to Wikipedia there's roughly 10 chapters every volume so that'd make it.. 56 Volumes long?
Well I dunno about Rumiko but I think a lot of readers/viewers got burnt out.. it just seemed like Rumiko purposely tried to stretch it out as long as possible, even if it was becoming ridiculous.
Inuyasha's not even close to being the longest running manga though.
